profile: prof. dr. t. hankemeier

Prof. Dr. Thomas Hankemeier is professor of Analytical Biosciences at the LACDR since October 2004. He studied Chemistry at University Bielefeld and University Ulm and graduated in 1992 (cum laude). He performed his PhD research at the Vrije University Amsterdam (1993-1996) on hyphenation of sample preparation and gas chromatography with spectrometric detection, and obtained his Ph.D. in 2000. From 1997 to 2004 he was responsible as a scientific product manger at the department of Analytical Sciences at TNO Nutrition and Food Research for research in the fields of food safety & quality, polymer analysis and metabolomics. He was involved in setting up holistic analytical methods for analysis of a very wide range of metabolites present in micro-organisms and mammalians. His current research interest is the development of systems biology, with a special focus on the development of suitable analytical methods to detect ultimately all metabolites and peptides in human body fluids, tissues and single cells: for this he uses multi-dimensional separation methods, mass spectrometry, micro/nano-technology in combination with various data analysis tools. He is setting methods to reveal subtle differences in metabolite profiles to identification novel phenotypic information discriminating health and (sub-types of) disease, unravel metabolic pathways associated with disease, and understand their regulation.
