profile: prof. dr. l.m. havekes

Prof. Dr. Louis M. Havekes is Senior Research Fellow at TNO Prevention and Health and professor of Lipoprotein Metabolism at Leiden University Medical Center. He developed extensive long term collaborations with the LUMC department of Human and Clinical Genetics, department ofEndocrinology and Metabolic Diseases and department of Cardiology. Louis Havekes is participating in the CMSB platform “animal models”. He is head of the section “lipid and atherosclerosis” and his current research interests are: 1. Genetic and environmental factors influencing lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis, and 2. The metabolic relationship between obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes on one hand and hyperlipidemia on the other hand. With both research lines he makes extensively use of various transgenic mouse models. He has developed well established mouse models for hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis (a.o. APOE3Leiden mice), obesity and diabetes. With (combinations of) these animal models genetic and environmental factors involved in the cellular processes of atherogenesis are being identified. In addition, much focus is put to genetic and environmental factors involved in lipoprotein, fatty acid and glucose metabolism which is fundamental to the metabolic syndrome, the most prevalent disease in Western societies.
