profile: prof. dr. f. kuipers
Prof. Dr. Folkert Kuipers is full professor of Pediatrics, with a personal chair 'Development and Regulation of Liver and Intestinal Function', since June 2000. He is also head of the Laboratory of Pediatrics at the University of Groningen combining basic and clinical research facilities and diagnostics of inborn errors of metabolism (www.LabPediatricsRug.nl). He studied Biology at the University of Groningen and graduated in 1982 (cum laude) with specialisations in Animal Physiology and Medical Biology. He received his PhD degree (cum laude) in the Faculty of Medical Sciences in 1987, followed by an appointment as a research fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) from 1988-1992. In 1992, he was appointed as Established Investigator of the Netherlands Heart Foundation for a 5 years period. From 1997-2000, he was associate professor (UHD) at the Departments of Pediatrics/Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University Hospital Groningen. His work deals with regulation and development of lipid and cholesterol synthesis, metabolism and transport in liver and intestine, (dys-) regulation of bile formation and, more recently, with the interactions between hepatic carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in inborn and acquired metabolic disorders. He is (co-) author of >200 peer-reviewed publications and 30 book chapters.

Currently, Prof. Kuipers is Coordinator of Center for Liver, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases, one of 6 institutes of Research School “Groningen University Institute for Drug Exploration” (GUIDE), and member of the Scientific Committees of the European Lipoprotein Club and the Dutch Atherosclerosis Society, the ConMW committee VENI grants and the board of the Netherlands Society for Hepatology.
