profile: prof. dr. e.c.m. mariman
Prof. Dr. Edwin C.M. Mariman is since 2001 full professor of Functional Genetics at the University of Maastricht, Research institute NUTRIM. He studied chemistry at the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands) and completed his thesis entitled “Some aspects of RNA splicing” at the Department of Biochemistry. After two years as a postdoc studying the relation between auto-antibodies and rheumatism, he was appointed as senior researcher at the Department of Human Genetics of the University of Nijmegen. In 1990 he became the head of the Division of Genetic Research focusing on the elucidation of genetic defects for human monogenic disorders. In 1995 he became the head of the Division of DNA diagnostics of the Clinical Genetics Center of the Academic Hospital Nijmegen and at the same time the supervisor of the genetic research on multifactorial disorders, in particular neural tube defects. He is the (co)author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications. The major line of research concerns gene-nutrient interactions in relation to complex human disorders like obesitas, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Prof Mariman is the coordinator of the Maastricht Proteomics Center (www.proteomics.unimaas.nl). He is also a board member of the national Center for Human Nutrigenomics and of various scientific advisory committees.
