profile: dr. b. van ommen

Dr. Ben van Ommen is the senior research fellow of TNO in the area of functional genomics and nutritional systems biology. He co-ordinates the genomics technology and bioinformatics implementation and heads the nutrigenomics research activities at TNO Quality of Life. Trained in biochemistry and toxicology, his PhD and early research carrier were dedicated to molecular and biochemical mechanisms in toxicology and nutrition, including the inter-individual differences of genetic origin. Since 1998, his research group aims at approaching effects of nutrition and nutrition related bioactive compounds concerning health promotion and disease prevention on a genome-wide scale.

memberships/awards

Dr. Van Ommen has established the nutrigenomics society, a (so far) informal research community of researchers and research programs, extending on the NuGO partnership, now having ca. 1500 members. Other memberships include FEBS, Dutch Tocixology Society, Metabolomics Society.
